چکیده

The title of William Dembski’s book No Free Lunch (Dembski 2002a) indicates that he perceives the no free lunch (NFL) theorems (Wolpert and Macready 1997) as pivotal to his thesis asserting that “specified complexity cannot be purchased without intelligence.” Indeed, many statements in Dembski’s book emphasize the crucial role of the NFL theorems. However, in his response (2002b) to a review rebutting his use of the NFL theorems Dembski claims that the NFL theorems are secondary for his thesis, while his principal argument is related to a “displacement problem.” I will show in this chapter that neither the NFL theorems nor the notions related to the displacement problem support Dembski’s thesis. Critiques of of Dembski’s work can be found in a number of publications (Wein 2002a,b; Shallit 2002; Rosenhouse 2002; Perakh 2001a, 2002a, 2002b, 2003; Young 2002; Orr 2002; Van Till 2002). Here I will discuss only chapter 4 (Evolutionary Algorithms) of Dembski’s book, concentrating on his use of the NFL theorems and on his “displacement problem.”

اثر یک وهله مکمل سازی با رزوین (رزوراترول) بر ظرفیت ضداکسایشی تام، سوپراکساید‌دیسموتاز و کراتین کیناز در بازیکنان والیبال زن نخبه

Background and Objective: An imbalance between free radical production and antioxidant defense system components can lead to oxidative stress. Resvin is a plant derived antioxidant that can reduce the production of free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of one period of Resvin supplement consumption on the total serum antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase and ...

No-Free-Lunch theorems in the continuum

No-Free-Lunch Theorems state, roughly speaking, that the performance of all search algorithms is the same when averaged over all possible objective functions. This fact was precisely formulated for the first time in a now famous paper by Wolpert and Macready, and then subsequently refined and extended by several authors, always in the context of a set of functions with discrete domain and codom...

Search, Binary Representations and Counting Optima

Choosing a good representation is a vital component of solving any search problem. However, choosing a good representation for a problem is as diicult as choosing a good search algorithm for a problem. Wolpert and Macready's No Free Lunch theorem proves that no search algorithm is better than any other over all possible discrete functions. We elaborate on the No Free Lunch theorem by proving th...

Market Free Lunch and Large Financial Markets

The main result of the paper is a version of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing (FTAP) for large financial markets based on an asymptotic concept of no market free lunch for monotone concave preferences. The proof uses methods from the theory of Orlicz spaces. Moreover, various notions of no asymptotic arbitrage are characterized in terms of no asymptotic market free lunch; the difference...

Falling towards Forgetfulness: Synaptic Decay Prevents Spontaneous Recovery of Memory

Long after a new language has been learned and forgotten, relearning a few words seems to trigger the recall of other words. This "free-lunch learning" (FLL) effect has been demonstrated both in humans and in neural network models. Specifically, previous work proved that linear networks that learn a set of associations, then partially forget them all, and finally relearn some of the association...
